Balbi Crypt and Sacred Area of Largo Torre Argentina

Underground Rome

is an underground complex connected to the ancient theatre of Balbo in Rome, built by Lucius Cornelius Balbus in 13 BC who was a politician and military of the Roman Empire, victorious of several military campaigns in Africa, including acting as proconsul of Africa in the lands before Getuli and then Garamantes in 20 BC Saharan Africa in Libya, he returned to Rome and Augustus asked permission with the treasures of war to build a theatre in Rome. Today enclosed between Botteghe Oscure Street , Via dei Polacchi,  Via dei Delfini and Via Caetani there are the remains of the crypt adjacent to the theatre. The atmospheric basements present themselves at different levels due to the use several times during the centuries of the original structures. The tour will continue in the Area Sacra of Largo Argentina, the name of the square refers to the so called  Argentina Tower from Burchard  at the end of  ‘400. The high priest, who was born in Strasbourg (Argentoratum in Latin) and therefore loved to sign himself Argentinus, the archaeological site has the remains of four temples enclosed in a review, within which we can still see the spot where Julius Caesar was killed in 44 BC.
