Castel Gandolfo, the lake and The Greek Abbey and Nemi
Castel Gandolfo once owned by the Counts of Tuscolo in the early eleventh century, it passed to the family of Lombard origin of Gandolfi from Genoa, who erected the Castrum which still bears their name, in 1221 the castle became a possession of the Savelli, who rented in 1389 to Capizzucchi. In 1482 Pope Sixtus IV granted the possession of Castel Gandolfo to the Velletri Community, which had been damaged by the Savelli, who, however, returned four years later in possession of the feud. Pope Sixtus V (1585-1590) elevated Castel Gandolfo to the rank of Duchy in favor of Bernardino Savelli. Nevertheless, on account of the Savelli in the payment of huge debts, the Apostolic Chamber June 30th1596 distrained it. Pope Urban VIII (1623-1644) in 1628 was the first Pope who lived in Castel Gandolfo. From Castrum Gandulphi to Grottaferrata Castle, The Greek Abbey of 1004. Between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries where a a lot of looting took place against the Monastery. In 1482 the commendatory Cardinal Giuliano Della Rovere, future Pope Julius II, decided to provide the Abbey of a valid defense, and built around it a massive fortification. Thus in a few years arose the castle which takes its name from the Della Rovere.
