The Oldest Roman Baths

Caracalla's baths also called Antonine Baths (from the name of the dynasty of the Antonines) constitutes one of the greatest examples of imperial baths in Rome, it is still preserved and free of modern buildings. They were constructed by Emperor Caracalla on the Aventine Hill, between 212 and 217 AD, these baths were the most sumptuous of the Roman Empire capital even if their were made for the population, they were attended by the most highly placed social classes in fact they were usual to attend the baths of Agrippa, especially those of Nero or the baths of Trajan on the Esquiline. The visit will begin retracing all the environments of the spa like a true Roman. The whole complex was finally used as an agricultural area, in particular as a vineyard, used by owners of neighboring villas or ecclesiastical bodies and associations. Abandonment took place in the sixth century was, then the exploitation of the ruins as a quarry for even high quality materials (marble and metal) took place and for entire structures such as columns to be reused for quality constructions such as the Cathedral of Pisa.
